Bulk Bag Filling and Discharging - Dense, Stable Filling and Dust Free Discharging
Ingredients Handled
Wood flour
Control and Metering's Customer
A molded parts producer was seeking to expand their production. Rather than expand their existing plant however, they wanted to take advantage of favorable business incentives in a neighboring state by building a new facility.
Customer's Reason For Using Bulk Bags
Wood flour is the raw ingredient for the molding machines. Their plan was to continue manufacturing it at the existing plant then transfer the bags about 100 miles to the new molding plant. The company chose to use bulk bags for ease of handling, low cost, and inexpensive return of the reusable container.
Control and Metering Application Solution
A filling machine was required in the plant producing the wood flour, and a discharger was required at the production plant receiving the wood flour.
Control and Metering's Model B filling machine was chosen for its hang filling capability which automatically centers and stretches the bag weave during filling. The Model B's patented cone densification table maximized the weight and stability of the package.
The Flo-Spout Monorail discharger was chosen for safety, dust control, and its ability to induce flow.
Application Challenges and Their Solution
Several questions were raised by management and by plant personnel:
- How do we maximize the truck load of this lightweight material?
- How do we control dust at the filling point and discharge end?
- Will the bags be stable enough to be handled safely?
- How do we minimize time spent for both the filling and discharging process?
- What type of bag should we use?
- Will we be able to get this poor flowing ingredient out of the bag?
Why The Customer Chose Control and Metering
The company approached several bulk bag handling equipment companies. Control and Metering assessed the application requirements, suggested a bag style and asked a bulk bag manufacturer (Intertape Polymer Group) to produce sample bags for testing.
Control and Metering ran a complete test at their facility to confirm their discharger could get the ingredient to flow out of the bag and to determine how much weight could be stored in each bag. A video was taken to demonstrate how well the equipment controlled dust. To complete the test, the properly filled and densified bulk bags were shipped back to the company to prove the stability of the package.
